Shimabara was once a bustling hanamachi (geisha district) frequented by court nobles, feudal lords, and even the Shinsengumi. Flourishing there were the highest-ranking geiko, known as Shimabara Tayu.
A Tayu was more than just a courtesan. She was a special individual who entertained guests with her profound knowledge, excelling not only in music, song, dance, and traditional instruments like the koto and shamisen, but also in classical poetry such as waka and haikai.

Sumiya: The Last Remaining Ageya in Japan The Sumiya Motenashi Cultural Museum
A space that is a work of art in itself, embodying the aesthetic of motenashi (hospitality).
Sumiya was once a gathering place for figures who shaped Japanese history, including Shinsengumi's Isami Kondo and Kamo Serizawa, as well as Takamori Saigo. It is the only surviving ageya (a high-class restaurant-teahouse) building that still preserves the vibrant atmosphere of that era.
An ageya, a place for extravagant banquets, is a space where the wisdom and aesthetic sense of omotenashi breathes in every corner. From the bold composition of the Pine Room to the delicate mother-of-pearl inlay in the beautiful Aogai Room, and the serene tranquility of the famous Garyumatsu Garden, Sumiya is a comprehensive art space where architecture, garden, and art pieces are harmoniously integrated.
The furnishings of the time, which continue to captivate visitors, are a collection of the finest examples of Japanese aesthetics and culture. This opulent space allows us to imagine how people of that time enjoyed culture and deepened their relationships.

かつて京の花街として栄華を極めた島原。その地に、創業以来三百数十年の歴史を紡ぎ、今なお現役の置屋として暖簾を掲げる一軒が「輪違屋（わちがいや）」です。ここは、太夫や芸妓たちが暮らし、芸を磨いた伝統の空間。通常は固く扉を閉ざし、一見のお客様には開かれることのない、本物の花街文化が息づく場所です。
大名や公家に芸を披露していた島原太夫による、高僧のお練りを様式化した「太夫道中」、顔見世の儀式「かしの式」、太夫だけの舞「いにしえ」が披露されます。
吉原の花魁たちも、その姿形を真似するほど憧れの存在だった島原太夫。

Wachigaiya: A Traditional Okiya in Kyoto's Shimabara, Where Tradition Still Breathes
Behind these doors, another tale of Kyoto is preserved.
Once a flourishing hanamachi (geisha district), Shimabara is home to Wachigaiya, an okiya (geisha house) that has woven over 300 years of history since its founding and is still in operation today. This is a traditional space where tayu and geiko lived and perfected their art. Typically, the doors are firmly closed to the public, protecting a true hanamachi culture that is rarely seen.
Here, you can witness performances by the Shimabara Tayu, who once entertained feudal lords and court nobles. These include the Tayu Dochu (a stylized procession of a high-ranking monk), the Kashino-shiki (a ritual for revealing new faces), and Inishie (a dance performed exclusively by the tayu).
The Shimabara Tayu were so revered that even the oiran of Yoshiwara emulated their appearance.
